According to the White House Office of Science and Technology, corporate espionage - theft of such intellectual
property as designs, marketing plans, manufacturing processes, prototypes, formulas, and software codes - costs US
companies $100 billion annually in lost sales. About 85 percent of corporate espionage crimes are perpetrated by
employees - a new hire who is actually a "plant" by a foreign or domestic competitor, or a member of the cleaning
crew who is bribed to hide a microphone in your conference room.
